Sunday, June 22,2008, Berkeley Hills Lutheran
Church voted to call The Reverend Scott A. Bryte
as co-pastor. He and Pastor Heather will serve the
congregation together. Pastor Heather will continue
to focus on Youth and Family Ministries and
Christian Education while Pastor Scott will focus on
Stewardship, Evangelism, and Outreach. Many
areas of ministry will be shared including
preaching/worship and pastoral care/visitation.
Pastor Bryte has been a pastor in the Lutheran
Church for 19 years. He currently serves St. Mark
Lutheran Church in Brookline (in the south hills of
Pittsburgh) where he has been for the past 13 years.
Prior to that he served Christ Lutheran in Charleroi,
PA and St. Andrew Lutheran in Brownsville, PA.
In addition to parish ministry. Pastor Scott has
served on a variety of synod committees including
Discipline, Youth, and Communications. He has
been a Conference Dean, served on the Synod
Council and on the Cape Agape and Camp
Lutherlyn Boards and been active in the ecumenical
ministerium wherever he has served.
Pastor Scott brings many creative gifts with him.
He has written several books that include a
children's book, "Tales from the Inner City,"
(2007) and two Lenten drama series, "Dateline
Jerusalem," (2005) and "Beneath the Cross: Letters
for a Good Friday World" (2008). Two other
projects are nearing completion, and should be
published by the end of the year.
He has an active puppet ministry in his current
congregation that invites kids and young adults into
ministry using puppets and humor to teach Bibles
stories. He is also a ventriloquist, a gift he uses in
sharing the Gospel throughout the area.
Pastor Scott's strengths include being rooted in the
living word of God and in Lutheran theology; a
broadly understood sense of stewardship that
includes our whole being, the giving of all that God
has blessed us with and made us to be; a passion for
teaching; and an engaging preaching and worship
style.
Pastor Scott is married to Kathleen Bryte. They met
in the high school marching band and have been
together ever since. She is a graduate of Mercy
Hospital School of Nursing, and he attended Thiel
College. They were married between college
graduation and the beginning of seminary. Pastor
Scott graduated from Gettysburg Seminary in 1989.
Kathleen is a full time nurse educator at UPMC
Magee Women's Hospital, and is finishing her
master's degree (MSN) at Carlow University.
They have two children. Zachary has just
completed his junior year as a history major at Thiel
College. Meghan has just graduated from Baldwin
High School and is looking to attend Edinboro in
the fall to study anthropology and archaeology.
In looking at Berkeley Hills Lutheran, Pastor Scott
is excited about the possibility of serving in a team
ministry; being part of the growth and expansion of
our ministries and facilities; and the opportunity to
share his gifts with us as a pastor. He also looks
forward to being able to continue to use his creative
gifts in writing, puppeteering and ventriloquism.
Pastor Scott will begin serving at Berkeley Hills on
August 3,2008.
| | | Summer Schedule Begins Our Summer Worship Schedule Begins May 25th, 2008. 8:30 & 10:00 A.M. Worship No Sunday School 6:00 P.M. Evening Worship | | | The Stephen Ministries Stephen Ministry AT BHLC:
We are currently recruiting for Stephen
Ministers. There is a short application form
for that will be available at the church office
or through a Stephen Leader- Laurie
Schantz. Mary Ann Klein, or Eric Jones.
What is the Stephen Ministry:
The Stephen Ministry is a lay care giving
ministry. Stephen Ministers administer
distinctly Christian care to people going
through significant life changes. Stephen
Ministers are not counselors, but are trained
Christian caregivers. Their role is to listen
and to care- not to counsel and advise. The
Stephen Ministry is confidential and
supervised to provide the best possible care.
How Stephen Ministry Works:
Stephen Leaders recruit and select laypeople
from the congregation to serve as Stephen
Ministers and provide them with training in
Christian care giving. Upon completion of
the training, these lay persons are
commissioned as Stephen Ministers Stephen
Leaders then link each Stephen Minister
with a care receiver—a member of the
congregation or community who is in need
of quality Christian care. A Stephen
Minister normally is assigned to only one
care receiver at a time and meets with the
care receiver for an average of about one
hour each week. Stephen Ministers also
meet twice monthly for peer supervision and
continuing education.
The Stephen Series Logo:
The logo Stephen Ministry congregations
use consists of a cross and circle, together
with a broken person and a whole person.
The broken person stands behind the cross,
symbolizing the brokenness in our lives as a
result of our sin. The whole person stands in
front of the cross because it is through the
cross of Jesus that we again are made whole.
The circle symbolizes both the wholeness
we receive through Christ and God's
unending love for us.
Stephen Ministry Facts:
The Stephen Ministry began in 1975 when
the Rev. Kenneth C. Haugk, Ph.D., a pastor
and clinical psychologist, trained nine
laypersons at his congregation to be Stephen
Ministers. Today more than 9000
congregations have enrolled and been
trained in the Stephen Ministry. More than
50,000 individuals have been trained as
Stephen Leaders. Those Stephen Leaders
have trained more than 450,000 laypersons
to be Stephen Ministers.
